Background Noise on Zoom Mobile: The Settings That Exist on iPhone and Android

The Zoom app on your phone does not have the desktop's Low, Medium and High noise suppression picker, so there is no "High" setting to switch on for background speech. What it does have is a short list of Microphone modes: Noise removal, the default, which adjusts itself automatically; Personalized audio isolation, which aims at your voice and away from other people talking nearby; and Original sound for musicians, which switches processing off. On top of Zoom's own mode, your phone can add a filter of its own: Voice Isolation on iPhone, and Mic mode or Clear Calling on some Android phones. The biggest win is still physical: an earbud mic near your mouth.

What Zoom mobile offers vs desktop

Zoom's desktop app, on Windows, macOS and Linux, has more controls than its phone app. On desktop, Noise removal comes with a Background noise suppression dropdown (Auto, Low, Medium, High), and High, the most aggressive level, is the one Zoom says goes after other people talking in the background. There is also an echo cancellation setting with Auto, Low and High. On a phone, Zoom's own article says Noise removal "will automatically adjust noise suppression": there is no level to choose, and the echo setting is not listed for mobile.

Personalized audio isolation is listed for the Zoom mobile app on Android and iOS. Its standard version is meant for headset mics. If Zoom detects a non-headset mic and you have not recorded a voiceprint, it falls back to standard noise removal. The improved version with a voice recording needs Zoom for iOS 6.1.5 or later on an iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation) or iPhone 11 and later.
Original sound for musicians turns Zoom's processing off, for music or when another filter is doing the work. On a phone it must be enabled in the app's settings first. Zoom describes it as "the only advanced audio profile available on the Zoom mobile app".

1. Set Zoom's microphone mode

In the Zoom app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Audio.
Under Microphone modes, leave Noise removal selected for most calls.
If other voices around you are the problem and you wear a headset, choose Personalized audio isolation instead. Zoom's mobile article on it words the path as More, Settings, Audio, Audio Profile.
During a meeting, tap More, then Audio settings, to switch modes without leaving the call.

Why this works: Noise removal is tuned for the usual phone situation and needs no input from you. Personalized audio isolation goes after the one thing it cannot handle well, a nearby voice, but it works best on a headset mic, which is another reason to wear one.

2. Add your phone's own filter

Your phone can clean its own microphone before Zoom gets the audio.

iOS: during the Zoom call, open Control Center, tap the button for Zoom at the top, then tap Voice Isolation. That is the path in Apple's iOS 27 guide, which says Voice Isolation "reduces background noise so your voice comes through clearly". Apple does not list which third-party apps support it, so check that the button appears in your own call. Our three iPhone noise settings explainer separates this from AirPods' listening modes.

Android: on Samsung phones, swipe down with two fingers during the call, tap Mic mode and choose Voice focus. Samsung names Zoom among the apps where this works, but only on speakerphone and only on its listed models: the Galaxy S21 and S22 families, Z Flip3 to Flip5, Z Fold3 to Fold5, and Tab S8 and S9. On Pixel 10 and later, except the Pixel 10a, Clear Calling (Settings, Sound & vibration, Clear Calling) covers internet call apps; on Pixel 7 to 9 it covers phone calls only.

Why this works: the phone filter and Zoom's filter act at different points, so on a supported phone you get two passes. If your voice starts to sound thin or clipped, turn one of them off and compare.

Calls that matter, from the road?

No phone app fully removes street noise mid-call, Krisp's included: its help centre says the mobile app does not support noise cancellation yet. 3. Move the mic and make mute your resting state

Use any earbuds with a mic near your mouth rather than the phone's bottom mic at chest height. A wired pair skips the Bluetooth call link; our earbuds vs phone mic ranking explains why that matters.
Mute straight after you speak, and say once at the start: "I'm on the move, I'll stay muted unless I'm talking."
Outdoors, turn your back to the wind and shield the mic with your body. Wind beats every filter on this page.

Why this works: a mic a few centimetres from your mouth changes the balance between your voice and the street more than any setting can, and a closed mic is the only filter that never guesses wrong. Our mute habits guide has the full routine.
